Modern Day Robinson Crusoes!

I was in the cold of the sea before I could even open my mouth to scream...
Washed up on an island in the Pacific, Michael struggles to survive on his own.
Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, Heinemann 1999

How would you survive if you were washed up on a desert island?
How would you keep safe and warm?
How could you use the resources of the island to help you to live?

These are the questions our Year 5 and Year 6 children have been exploring this week.

Inspired by Michael Morpurgo's wonderful story of survival and friendship, our children have used the text to learn in all curriculum areas.

During Design and Technology lessons, they investigated how to make a shelter that was waterproof and windproof. They made prototypes of their group designs and put them to the test using paintbrushes and water to make rain and a hairdryer to simulate wind!

The task was undoubtedly tricky but the children worked well in teams to discuss and refine their ideas. Mrs Minns now knows who she wants to be with if she ever goes on a high-seas adventure!
