Reception Class at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School embraced Climate Week with enthusiasm and determination. Using various stories such as, ‘Charlie and Lola Save the Planet,’ and ‘Michael Recycle,’ along with CBeebies resources, the 4 and 5 year olds quickly grasped the concept.
Children used recyclable materials to make models, both inside and outside the classroom. Some children used favourite stories as their inspiration. On Tuesday children planted potatoes with Mr Foster, the caretaker, using recycled bottles as plant pots and manure collected by Mrs Hopwood ‘fresh that morning!’
On Wednesday some children visited the recycle area at Tesco. They noticed that other materials could be recycled too and wanted to help, so we collected shoes and clothes and another group took the items in to Barnardos.
The children commented on the many things they saw to buy at theBarnardos Recycle Centre and asked if they could go back and buy something. They knew that the money created would go to help children less fortunate than themselves.
‘I have lots of clothes that don’t fit me anymore,’ said one of the girls.
‘I have toys that I don’t play with anymore.’
The children decided to have a recycle toy day, a swap-shop kind of day, where they brought along one toy from home that they no longer used and swapped with a friend. Finally, after watching a Cbeebies clip about recycling to protect our planet, the children noticed the characters collecting rain water to recycle. Some of the boys decided to set up an area within the garden to collect water forour cress and potatoes.
‘Michael Recycle,’ a recycling super hero, inspired the children to create their own uper hero costumes.
We learned so much this week about how to save our planet.
‘Mum, if you recycle one jar, I can play on my Wii for 5 hours,’ said Robert.
