Box Tops for Education Town Hall

My son is only four years old so although I've heard about the Box Tops for Education program, it isn't something that I've been actively involved in because he is only in pre-school. However, after attending the General Mills Box Tops for Education Town Hall at Morehouse College last week, I am certainly going to help with the program at my son's school because as a homeschool cooperative we are always in need of supplies!

If you are not familiar with Box Tops for education it is really a simple way to raise funds for schools by utilizing the tops from foods and products that many of use on a daily basis. You simply clip and collect the tops, bring them to school to the coordinator and they are sent it. The school will receive a check! Easy!

The Town Hall was hosted by comedian Steve Harvey he is hilarious and has a heart for education.

He encouraged us to participate in the program, presented a video of a local teacher from Beecher Hills elementary school and a parent from Legacy Christian Academy who have successfully implemented the program in their schools. Considering that 86% of fourth graders are reading below grade level, this program is an easy way to provide supplemental supplies for teachers to help them education our children.

Steve Harvey was joined on stage by the illustrious Susan Taylor, former editor in chief of Essence magazine and founder of National CARES Mentoring Movement.

Together they moderated a panel featuring Dr. Jackie Fleming, Dr. Beverly D. Tatum (President of my alma mater Spelman College), Tommy Hillman (brand manager for General Mills) and artists Chili, Monica and Tisha Campbell Martin. The discussion was very lively and focused on the importance of actively participating in our children's education, utilizing box tops and being present. It was especially moving to hear from Tisha Martin about her identifying her child's autism and doing everything she can to work with him.

I truly enjoyed the discussion and most admit that attending the Town Hall not only raised my personal awareness about the Box Tops program but certainly has encouraged me to start participating. For more information about the program please visit the Box Tops website and participate! Free money for your child's school? Who would turn down such an opportunity?

Disclosure: I've been compensated for attending and writing about this event by the BLink but all of the opinions are 100% my own.
