The Coldest Journey...

On Wednesday, Year 4 pupils Nicholas and Mia accompanied Mrs Hargreaves and Mrs Reilly-O'Donnell on a most amazing journey. They travelled to London to visit the SA Agulhas before it set off on its epic journey to Antarctica.

After a very early start, they boarded the train in Darlington and nervously began their trip to deliver Mary Mouse to begin her life as mascot of The Coldest Journey team.

Mary had already said her "goodbyes" to the children at school and left with coat, scarf and skis, ready for her trip.

After arriving at London Kings Cross railway station the group boarded the "Tube" to travel to London Bridge underground station.

The ship was moored next to HMS Belfast, very close to the magnificent Tower Bridge and Tower of London. They admired the view with awe!

Boarding the ship was an overwhelming experience. The group were greeted by the Captain, who told them about his previous Antarctic adventures. Mrs Hargreaves was particularly thrilled to hear that he had been in charge of the keys to Captain Scott's cabin on the ice the last time he journeyed to the continent.

Finally the moment arrived when Mia and Nicholas handed over their precious cargo! Sir Ranulph Feinnes was delighted to meet the children, find out about their project work and accept the mouse as the new mascot of "The Coldest Journey." The children were so proud to present it to him on behalf of the children at our school, and indeed the children of our nation.

After spending time with Sir "Ran," a tour of the ship, courtesy of the South African crew was the order of the day.

Sadly the visit was soon at an end and the group made their farewells.

The visit was truly remarkable and one that will stay in the hearts of the group for ever.

Good luck and God's speed to all aboard the SA Agulhas; we look forward to following your journey until you safely return to warmer(?) climes!

Before their long journey home the children and teachers took the opportunity to see the Christmas lights and toy fayre in Knightsbridge; a perfect end to a perfect day!
