Walmart is undeniably one of the most progressive companies when it comes to sustainability. Just check out the sustainability goals that the company has set for itself:
Walmart is transparent about the progress and setbacks in the process to meet these goals. I am sharing some highlights from the recent Global Sustainability Milestone Meeting. If you are interested in watching the entire video click HERE.
There were several things that stood out for me in the video. I was especially impressed by the work being done in Brazil. Walmart has a focus on broadening and accelerating in Brazil by investing socially in people in the community. To that end, Walmart conducts a social retail school targeted at individuals between 17-29 years of age. The purpose of the school is to help the students learn about the retail business. Walmart recruits new associates from this group and 805 of them become Walmart employees.
I am also impressed by the Amazon conservation program that Walmart Brazil has sponsored. In this program, a ranger station was built at a critical point along the Amazon. The purpose of the ranger station is to protect a large number of acres in the Amazon to keep it from being clear cut (for mining or cattle) and abused. Walmart made a small investment to protect a large amount of the Amazon.
These are just a few points that stood out for me during the meeting. If you'd like more in-depth about the sustainability efforts of Walmart, please visit the Walmart environmental sustainability site.
