I'm a Mama Bear!

This is my favorite picture of my son and I.  Although we are living in the digital age, this was taken at an event and sadly I only have a hard copy (my apologies for the poor photo quality).  If I had it digitally I'd be sure to send this photo as my holiday card. They say there is nothing like a mother's love for her son and this photo epitomizes the love that we share for each other. It never ceases to amaze me when we are out around town and people ask if he is my only child. Apparently it is obvious that he is the love of my life and even when I am reprimanding him he clearly has me wrapped around his little finger!

Momma Polar Bears are equally (if not more) protective of their cubs and the Arctic Home website has an interesting feature where you can learn facts about Polar Bears and actually track five live Momma Bears! The momma bears in the Arctic are on a mission to both protect and feed their cubs in their quickly diminishing environment.

As a mama bear myself, I will do whatever it takes to ensure my son has the things he needs. Most recently he has taken to sleeping in the bed with me and although I know some frown upon co-sleeping, I figure he is only young once and at some point it will be difficult to even get a hug or kiss for him so I take advantage of all the cuddles I can get now!  For me this is going the extra mile because I enjoy having my bed to myself but we are currently in a major transition in our lives so this is the very least I can do for my son. And of course, I will always do more!

What is your personal mama bear story? Share it here in my comments or tweet #arctichome with your story. Also, don't forget to purchase the special white mama bear coca-cola cans and make a donation to save the environment!

Disclosure: Compensation was provided by Coca-Cola, but Coca-Cola is not a sponsor, administrator, or involved in any other way with this post. All opinions expressed in the post are my own and not those of Coca-Cola.

Boxers are a work of art!

My mom went to a really fun fundraiser for LBR last night. I would've liked to go too, but I can't quite manage to work a paintbrush with my paws! See, it was a painting party at a place called Let's Art in Plano, Texas. They sketch out a design on the canvas for you, then guide you through getting the colors and the shading and stuff right. Since this is LBR and our volunteers can't seem to think of anything besides their babies (and rightly so!), we got them to put together a cute drawing of a boxer. You could have cropped or natural ears, and then you could modify the colors and stuff to paint your own dog. How cool is that?

Everyone worked very hard to get it right.

This is our Pack Leader, Auntie Sharon, working on a portrait of her Booker. Isn't he handsome? (And if you look right next to her, you'll see my mom's masterpiece in progress!)

This is the whole pack! Wow, that's a lot of great looking boxers!

Here's my mom with her great masterpiece. Since she already has a big canvas portrait of me (from when I was in the calendar two years ago), she decided to paint my sissy Cinderella. I think she did a pretty good job!

Say Anything and Win an iPad!!!!

When I attended Blogalcious last month I had the opportunity to meet the founder of North Star Games, Luke. A table was set up with various games from the North Star line including Say Anything. In this game you answer a question and the answer with the most responses win. I am currently playing the game on facebook and answered the question  -  If I could train a monkey to do anything, what would I train it to do?

As a result of my playing along,  North Star Games will be giving my charity, The Lupus Foundation of America a $1000 donation! As part of a total donation of $5000 to the charities of the participating bloggers choice!  Take a visit to the contest on their Facebook page, vote for your favorite answer to the question and you will be entered to win an iPad!

Power of the Paw needed urgently!

Hello to all my furiends out there! I hope you had a good Thanksgiving, with lots of turkey and friends and things to be thankful for. I'm thankful for all the amazing people and dogs of Legacy Boxer Rescue! And right now, one of them needs our help really badly. Charity hasn't been feeling well since she had her surgery a few days ago. She had to go to the emergency vet today, and they found out she has a massive kidney infection. It's so bad that her poor little kidneys have shut down. :(

The vets are trying lots of things to help her, but they don't know if any of it will work. If she hasn't improved by tomorrow morning, then they're going to help her to the Bridge. I know that vets are awesome, but the power of the paw is even more awesome. Please please please keep Charity in your thoughts and prayers tonight. She has so much still to live for, and I know Santa Paws has an extra-special gift already prepared for her.

Please send up your thoughts, prayers, or good vibes for Charity and her foster mom and dad, who are really worried about her. We have four sets of paws crossed at my house!

GET WELL, CHARITY!

Update: I'm very sad to report that Charity passed away this afternoon. :( She was very loved, and I know she has lots of LBR cousins ready to play with her on the Bride. I hope my Aunt Nina shows her around.

Thanksgiving Eve

It is Thanksgiving Eve and families across the country are preparing for the big day! Turkeys brining, pies are baking but the big question I want to know is how do you handle dinnertime at your house? Do you have a kids table? Do the kids eat first?

Vist Mom's The Word on Dinner and give your best suggestions and ideas for dinner time. I'm sure we can all learn from each other!

Disclosure: I'm a Mom's The Word on Dinner ambassador and have been compensated for this post.

Marvellous Medieval Mayhem!

How would you like to spend the day as a medieval knight?

Children in KS1 know exactly how this feels as they spent the day on Friday exploring medieval castle life. They made a medieval banquet of biscuits and flat bread and they decorated eggs.

Highlight of the day was undoubtably the medieval ball!

Thank you to Mr Cooper for his help in making our day so special.

Another Charity update

There's not much new to report on our sweet girl, but I wanted to share some super-sweet pictures of her. You can tell she's getting used to the good life in her new foster home! Here she is with her foster sister, fellow LBR foster Miss Demeanor.

Here's the whole pack! The foster dogs Charity and Miss D with the two resident dogs, Bevo and LBR alum Stevie.

Charity says, "Ahhh, I could get used to this!"

Being Thankful

It's Thanksgiving - a time to share, and a time to reflect on all our blessings.

Gratefully yours,
Marjorie

Update on Charity

I don't recommend this diet, but now that Charity's little "friend" has been removed, she's lost over three pounds! Yuck, what a nasty growth. She had another tumor removed too, plus started her heartworm treatment. She's going to have a lot of healing to do for a while, but you can tell she already feels so much better. Yay, Charity!

Let's Get Ready to Rumble...!

On Tuesday Key Stage 2 were visited by poet Coral Rumble.

Coral's poems are very funny and it was great to hear her perform them.

Our favourite poem is, "My Teacher's as Wild as a Bison," but Mrs Reilly-O'Donnell's is, "Divine Intervention on an OFSTED Day!"

For more information about Coral's poems visit her website at http://www.coralrumble.co.uk/

A special lady

You know, I think all the folks at Legacy Boxer Rescue pretty well rock. They saved me, after all, and a whole bunch of other handsome boxers like me. But every now and again, they do something that just makes me really, really proud to be their ambassador.

I want to introduce you to a really special lady. This is Charity.

Do you see that weird-looking thing behind her right leg? That's a H-U-G-E tumor! I don't know how she even walks with that thing on! I know that boxers are prone to tumors, but that's just ridiculous! Here's a video of her so you can see it better. YUCK!

Pretty miserable, huh? Well, her last humans let her get to that point, and instead of doing anything to help her they just dumped her at the shelter! She was really miserable there, and she was going to be put to sleep just so she wouldn't hurt anymore.

Well, that's when the pawesome folks at LBR stepped up! One of our volunteers went to pick her up just so that she could have an afternoon of cheeseburgers and love before being helped to the Rainbow Bridge by one of our vets. But then another of our volunteers said, "Wait a minute! This girl's got spunk!" They thought she deserved a chance to fight it out for as long as she could, so they agreed to take her as their very own foster for however long she has left.

Charity lurves her new foster daddy!

So now Charity is a Legacy dog, and that means she's part of our family forever! She has a foster home that will love her and take care of her for as long as we can. She's never going to know what it's like to be scared and alone again. And that's why LBR people are the very bestest humans anywhere in the world.

I think Charity agrees!

Charity is going to the vet today to get that nasty tumor looked at, plus a bunch of other ones she has too. Please send her lots of warm fuzzy thoughts that everything goes well. I know that now she's found out what it's like to be part of the Legacy family, she wants to be in it for as long as she can. We love you, Charity!

Dog of the Day; Meet ZsaZsa!

Rescue Me Week may be over, but it's always rescue time here at LBR! We have over 100 available dogs, and more coming every day. Right now there are a lot of dogs in shelters that really need a foster home, but most of ours are full up! Do you know the best way to get a new foster place? Get a dog adopted!!

So today I want to introduce all of you to the lovely and fabulous Miss Zsa Zsa!

Zsa Zsa was named for the equally fabulous Gabor, but I think she's even prettier than her namesake! She's 4-5 years old and loves to play and snuggle in equal measure! She lives with several other dogs right now and gets along fine with them, but she really loves to be the center of attention, just like any diva!

Zsa Zsa would do best with slightly older kids, but basically she loves anyone who wants to pet her ears and make her the center of their world! Don't you think you need a Zsa Zsa of your own?

If you're interested in learning more about Zsa Zsa, check out her profile on savetheboxers.com. If she's the one for you, fill out your application and ask for the fabulous Miss Z today!

Hosea Feed the Hungry and the Homeless

There are numerous people in the Atlanta area who are hungry and homeless this Thanksgiving. Hosea Feed the Hungry is a non-profit organization that provides food and necessities to needy people in the Atlanta metro area. Every Thanksgiving they provide thousands of people with a meal, clothing, and grooming. I volunteered to set-up for the Martin Luther King day event earlier this year and am familiar with the work of Hosea Feed the Hungry.  When Walmart challenged me to buy a Thanksgiving meal for under $40 I immediately knew that I'd donate all of the food to Hosea Feed The Hungry.

Not only was I able to get an entire Thanksgiving meal including a turkey, yams, collard greens, corn, stuffing, rice and a sweet potato pie - I was way under budget with a grand total of $29.08! Since I was donating the food I had to rely on some canned goods but I know that even with fresh produce I would have come in under budget. You too can go to Walmart for all of your Thanksgiving essentials and perhaps make a donation to your local food bank this holiday season!

Disclosure: I am a Walmart mom and was compensated for this post but all of the opinions are 100% as usual!

Dinner Redux - Giveaway 3 $100 AMEX Giftcards!

As a Ragu Mom's The Word on Dinner ambassador I was asked about my utilization of leftovers but instead of leftovers I like to call it lunch/dinner redux! In the photo above I used a piece of salmon that I'd cooked the night before in my lunch salad. It was amazing and I enjoyed it. Since my son doesn't really like to eat salmon outright, I made muffins with the remaining salmon, froze them and reheated when my son wanted one. Sneaky way for me to get him to eat protein but no food goes to waste!

I want to hear about your favorite meal "redux" using leftovers. Ragú is sponsoring a giveaway of 3 $100 Amex giftcards just in time for the holidays! Leave a comment with your meal and be entered to win!!!!

Contest open until Friday, November 25th at 10PM EST.

A sad update to Rescue Me Week

Last week for Mayzie's Rescue Me Week and Adopt a Senior Pet Day, I posted about a sweet old gal named Ruby looking for a furever home. Sadly, just a few days later, Miss Ruby passed away. She'd been listless for a few days and was having tests run, but before they could figure out what was wrong, her foster dad came home to find she'd gone on to the Rainbow Bridge.

Her foster daddy and the rest of us at LBR miss her lots and lots. She was always a sweet sight at pet fairs, an island of serenity in an ocean of eager young boxers. Godspeed, Miss Ruby. We won't forget you!

Celebrating More Birthdays with ACS and Tiny Prints

Last week I ran my fourth 1/2 marathon - it feels funny typing that especially since before last October I'd never run a single one! My exercise and training for these events does help me in my personal journey to better health and studies have shown that regular exercise can help in the prevention of cancer. In both my first race and my last, I not only ran for myself but I also raised money for the fight against cancer. As a member of the American Cancer Society Bloggers Advisory Board I've had the opportunity to see first hand the work that ACS is doing to ensure we have a world with More Birthdays.  And am happy to announce the partnership they now have with Tiny Prints an online stationary boutique.

You can now purchase the ACS Tiny Prints Collection of More Birthdays cards. I personally really love Tiny Prints and have used them for holiday cards, thank you notes and now birthday cards! The cards are fully customizable and I took the opportunity to create a few cards. The first card I personalized was for my honored hero Melissa.

I ran the Savannah 1/2 marathon in her honor and wanted to send her a special card to commemorate the event. She is fighting non-Hodgins lymphoma and although it is not her birthday, I want to remind her to celebrate every day as if it is her birthday.

I also made a card for another girlfriend, her birthday is coming up in December and I choose a third card simply to have on hand for the next time I need a birthday card. There are nine different cards to choose from and 5% of the purchase price goes to the ACS, additionally, if you make a purchase of any type from the ACS page, 12.5% of the proceeds are directed to ACS.

If you are shopping for holiday cards or specifically birthday cards, choose Tiny Prints and make a difference in the fight against cancer!

Now and Later: Trends to Wear Year Round

As broke college students, keeping up with the changing trends season after season is not only hard, it’s expensive. With every season comes new “must have” items that are pushed to the back of the closet after only a few months, in favor of the next big thing. So before you buy some new clothes that will quickly go the way of harem pants and shoulder pads, choose fashions that can go the distance. Here are some versatile trends to incorporate into your wardrobe from the Spring 2012 runway shows that you can start wearing now, and will still look great come spring (and beyond).
Candy Colored
Pastel shades in all colors were all over the runway. Many designers mixed different colored pieces together to create rainbow outfits. For a more wearable version of this, stick to one attention grabbing shade and keep the rest of your outfit toned down.
These light pink flats from Target work as a neutral and can be worn with many different outfits, but the detailing makes them a little more interesting. Wear them now with jeans, a printed tank top, and a thick cardigan to stay warm or with a slouchy button down shirt and a colorful skirt in the spring.
Blue jeans are an essential, but colored denim can be a surprisingly flexible item in your closet. The color might seem scary at first, but wear it with neutrals and it’s a quick way to make a big statement with your outfit. Pair these pink jeans with a loose gray pullover now, or with a white tee and light scarf in the spring.
Bold Patterns
Another trend was big and bright patterns. From florals to geometrics to artsy prints, many different ones abounded. Some prints were mixed and matched while others stood alone as a statement making piece. Getting versatile, everyday pieces in fun patterns adds visual interest and can make a simple outfit seem more interesting.
A patterned floral scarf will instantly add interest to an outfit. Whether it be jeans, a skirt, or a cardigan, a scarf can work with almost any outfit.  Pair this scarf from Old Navy with a dark blazer and riding boots to keep warm this winter, or for spring wrap it around a dress that picks up the colors in the print.

This Target dress can be used year round. In the winter pair it with tights, a chunky open sweater and boots to stay warm, or in the spring show it off with bare legs and sandals.
One shoulder
One shouldered looks can work both dressed up or down. On the runway there were one shouldered LBDs, flowy dresses, and bright shirts. To wear this look in real life, let most of the attention be on the interesting shape of the piece and don't add too many other accessories.
This dress from Charlotte Russe mimics the look of a one shoulder, while still having the coverage of two straps. Wear this to holiday parties over black tights and ankle boots or for a night out with a fun pair of pumps.
This shirt has a bold print and cool shape that you can play up or down. For a casual winter day, wear it with skinny jeans, a slim cardigan and moccasins or for a dressy spring look tuck it into a bandage skirt with high heels.

Swap Til You Drop: A Cheaper Way to Find Great Clothes

As college students on a budget, I’m sure we all love finding chic clothes for cheap.  So, when I heard about the Boston Fashion Week Sip and Swap event, I was intrigued. The premise is simple: buy a ticket (usually about $10), bring a bag of clothes, and take home a bag filled with whatever you can carry.  However, I was a little skeptical about finding anything I would actually wear at the event. As is the case in many second hand stores, I assumed it would be filled with cast-offs a few decades old or things that no one really wants. I was prepared to have to do some digging to find any gems. Thankfully, though, I was completely wrong.
The event was held at the Microsoft NERD Center, a swanky place that immediately cast aside any concerns I might have had about the quality of the swap. From the stairs and balcony overlooking the swap area, I could see piles of clothes, racks stuffed with hanging garments, a wall lined with jewelry and bags, and a corner filled with shoes.

All the shoes up for grabs
When I dropped my bag of clothes off, I was given a canvas one to fill with my new finds. People started lining up about a half hour before the actual event.  The air inside the room quickly started to feel like the outside of Best Buy the night before Black Friday.  As soon as the swap started, everyone rushed towards the different sections and began grabbing whatever they could get their hands on. Although I had tried to come up with some sort of strategy beforehand, I was quickly overwhelmed. In the time it took me to look through one rack of clothes, some people had already stuffed their bags and were carrying more pieces in their arms. Some had even planned ahead and brought extra bags to fill with all their finds. Despite my lack of planning and the sheer immensity of swappers, I managed to find a fair amount of clothes and a few pairs of shoes, all cute and in good condition. There were certainly some things-like the matching 80’s floral print blazer and pants- that were less than desirable, but there was enough variety in both size and style that almost anyone could find something to suit their taste.

Setting up the before the swap
The swap was organized by the Swapaholics, a Boston based duo who have put on many other events like this throughout the country. Their website, Swap.com, which is launching soon, will be the online equivalent of a swapping party. Almost anything can be traded, from movies to furniture, and of course, to clothes. Another cool feature of the site is that it lists local swaps going on in your area. Just enter your zip code and you can find out when and where the next swap will be held.
For anyone interested, there are definitely some things I would recommend doing to get the most out of a swap. Scope out the area first, and try to decide what section you most want to look through. Swappers move fast, and if you don’t go directly to that area, chances are most of the really great stuff will already be gone. Feel free to just grab anything that catches your eye - you can always weed out items that don’t fit or aren’t exactly what you were looking for later. Almost everyone grabs something that they end up not wanting, so double check the tables after you’ve looked through everything, to see if there are new items available.
You may not find the perfect pair of shoes or the trendiest new clothes, but then again, you just might. Plus, there’s no buyer’s remorse, so you can try out something you might not commit to in a store.  So give it a try- you could walk out with a bag full of great clothes and maybe (like me) a newfound love of swapping.

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our 11-11-11 fundraiser, whether monetarily or by helping us share the news. LBR raised over $4,000 in just one day! That's a lot of help for the dogs!

Seasonless Style: Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

by Lauren Biscaldi

As summer winds down and blustery fall mornings return, college students everywhere will begin to anxiously survey their closets, fretting about making a seasonally appropriate style impression without breaking their budgets. Books are expensive, and so is thermal underwear. Knowledge, however, is incredibly sexy. Lumpy, grey long sleeves are not. Luckily, three hundred and sixty five degree style is here, reusing the most basic wardrobe staples season in and season out. It’s a trend that’s poised to take college campuses by storm, one closet at a time.
Instead of rushing out and buying an entirely new (and expensive) wardrobe, capitalize on the denim and khaki shorts of summertime by purchasing an inexpensive pair of tights, like this pair from H&M ($5.95). Buy a pair in navy blue or black, or even a geometric print for a unique and stylish way  to protect your limbs from autumn winds.
For a mature, sophisticated look appropriate in the workplace, try these Old Navy belted khaki shorts ($9.97). Pair this light and cool shoImage and video hosting by TinyPicrts-and-tights combo with a chic ballet flat in an eye-catching color, and volia – an insta-autumn wardrobe is created while hardly spending a time. A matching blazer completes the look, and you’ll be sure to impress your bosses not only with this fashionable office attire but also with your obviously savvy eye for recyclable pieces.
If shorts just aren’t your thing, remember that a simple summer sundress, like this one from American Eagle ($34.99) never goes out of style. Listen to your mother when she tells you to put on a scarf, though – but instead of breaking the bank on new autumn threads, salvage your style by reusing your sundress and pairing it with a lightweightchiffon scarf from American Eagle ($24.50) and a chunky boyfriend cardigan. Be sure not to overdo the prints; if your dress is splashed with floral, choose a scarf in a complimenting solid color.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
The tank top is a timelessly classic, basic piece that can be paired with almost anything. But what remains summer’s quintessential cover-up can easily become a workplace staple. This Kirra tank from PacSun ($14.50) strikes a perfect balance between the seasons. Available in a variety of colors, the lace racerback dealing adds a sophisticated touch that, when paired with a black blazer-and-pencil-skirt combo, stands up and impresses at an internship or office job. If you’re heading to class and don’t feel quite like dressing up, the same tank could be paired with dark wash skinny jeans.
Cute wedge sandals finish almost any outfit off, while simultImage and video hosting by TinyPicaneously dressing up any standard jeans uniform. Paired with skinny jeans or wide legged trousers, wedges work for both the tallest and the smallest, elongating legs and adding instant lift. For added fun, choose sandals with a print or pattern like polka dots or a floral print that will serve as a reminder of summer will into the fall. This strappy pair style from Payless ($12.00) compliments a variety of looks and can be worn well into October, allowing your feet to breathe for a few months longer.
No matter what type of three hundred and sixty five degree style you choose to practice, always remember that bright summer colors give your fall wardrobe an instant face-lift. Combine pops of color with darker, subdued hues, pair tanks with long pants and layer, layer, layer. Your wardrobe will thank you, and your wallet will thank you, and your professors will be thrilled that you purchased all of the textbooks for their class.
